The hue of this Vintage Gold Glass Glitter shows great with the classic styling of the Black Label series. The sizes on this big rock kit include a 14″x10″ rack tom, 16″x16″ floor tom, and 24″x18″ bass drum. Classic touches include the inlaid black-lacquer bass hoops, Radio King style lugs and rail mount. Deluxe Cocktail Kit in Vintage Gold Glass Glitter

Today’s kit is a Deluxe Cocktail Kit in True Gold Glass Glitter. Featuring the standard 10″x6″ snare, 10″x8″ tom, and 16″x24″ cocktail drum, the finish on this kit really pops. The wrap is new-old-stock pulled for this project. Vintage wrap features crushed glass that catches the light in more ways than the current wrap on the market, and I always dig a chance to pull some of the vintage stock out and use it to make something really stunning. Steam Bent 14″x6.5″ with the Top Hat & Cane treatment

Here’s a close-up look at a recently completed snare that was part of this cool kit. The shell is a 14″x6.5″ 1-Ply Steam Bent maple with matching reinforcement rings, wrapped in a pre-aged marine pearl with the Top Hat & Cane pattern recreated over it. The hardware includes individual radio king lugs top and bottom, stick saver hoops, Dunnett R4 strainer, Puresound wires, and the classy new Steam Bent 1-Ply round badge. Check it out:

Black Label 30′s style Trap Kit

With the recent Top Hat & Cane kit, we took it back to the 40′s with the finish and the 50′s with the hardware. Today we step back another decade to the late 20′s and mid 30′s with a true Trap Kit style build. Built with the goal of capturing the sound and style of the era with modern touches that make it tour-ready. The sizes include a 14″x5″ main snare, 14″x12″ field drum/snare, 16″x14″ floor tom/cocktail drum, 22″x10″ bass, and an 11″ traditional Chinese tom. The long list of custom touches includes pre-aged and inlaid wood hoops, an original 1920′s/1930′s Ludwig wood block, a clip-on tom mount, reproduction 3-point style strainers, low-boy hihat stand and much more. Top Hat & Cane

Today I’m keeping it old school with this special kit that has some awesome vintage details on it. This is the first kit to wear the new Steam Bent 1-Ply Shell round badge, and the first drums ever to feature the rare Ludwig Top Hat & Cane pattern accurately reproduced on Pre-Aged Marine Pearl. The results are nothing short of amazing, as we combined the best hardware and components the past has to offer with the best shells and craftsmanship available in the present. A few of the vintage highlights include the Ludwig Top Hat & Cane custom reproduced wrap, Rogers Swiv-o-Matic Tom & Cymbal Mounts, Slingerland Radio King style lugs, Stick Saver hoops, and a matching canister throne. A few of the modern highlights include steam bent 1-ply maple shells, Dunnett R4 strainers and Puresound wires on both snares, modern style Gull-Wing spurs, clam shell leg brackets and clam shell bass drum claws that match the classic Radio King profile. Avett Brothers ring in the new year on their new Black Labels

Happy New Year! Lets kick it off with some exciting news: The Avett Brothers took delivery of their new kit just in time for the sold-out New Years Eve show in Asheville, and are now rockin’ an awesome set of Black Label drums. A heavy vintage vibe was desired from this setup, both to compliment the sound and the aesthetics of their style. The result is a Black Label kit featuring 13″x9″ and 16″x16″ wood-hooped toms, a 22″x14″ bass, and a 14″x6.5″ snare. Finish is a custom mixed blend of reds and browns to create a very old-school mahogany, and the hoops have a deep amber and tobacco mix on them to give that aged vibe. Lugs are Radio King reproductions with a brushed satin nickel style finish, and coated heads were used top and bottom to get that really warm old-school sound. Even the Silver Glass Glitter inlay on the bass hoops was pre-aged and features no gloss, a perfect match to the hardware and hoops.

Black Label Bop Kit in Vintage Gold Glass Glitter

This smooth Black Label bop kit is enroute to it’s new home in Norway. Featuring several custom touches that really lock in the vintage vibe, this kit sounded just as good as it looked. The wrap is actual vintage gold glass glitter, made from a different type of crushed glass than the current glitters that are manufactured. The result is a deeper shimmer under bright lights that looks amazing in person. Vintage Gretsch-Style spurs, straight floor tom legs, Radio King style lugs, and die cast hoops compliment the finish perfectly on this one. Sizes are 12″x8″, 14″x14″, and 18″x14″. Check it out:

Club Date style Black Label, in Burnt Sienna Satin Lacquer

This is the first Club Date style Black Label kit, recently shipped off to it’s new home in Finland. The sizes are 12″x8″, 14″x14″, and 20″x14″ and feature a beautiful Burnt Sienna satin lacquer finish. Chrome hardware all around, including Dunnett gull-wing spurs and a DW rail mount. Center mounted Radio King style lugs and custom length tension rods give it that smooth club-date style, and lighten the kit a bit for easier load in/load out. Give the shop a call if you’re interested in a club date style setup, running some specials through the end of 2010 on this style of setup. Dig it:

I’ve got a special Black Label project that’s been in the works for a long time, that you’ll get to see in the next month or so as all the little details come together and it gets wrapped up. This one has required some special parts sourcing and design work on a number of levels, from the very custom finish to getting exactly the right vintage hardware. The vintage gear heads will appreciate the quality of the chrome on this Rogers mount, one of the special pieces to the puzzle of this killer project:

Friday Flashback! G. Love Japan backline kit

Today’s Friday Flashback dates from around the middle of 2003. This 12″x8″, 16″x16″, and 20″x14″ set of Phatties was finished in a custom Duco style sparkle lacquer and outfitted with Slingerland style lugs and Stick Saver hoops, for a classy old-school vibe all around. The finish was a compliment to the blue & silver sparkle lacquer duco style kit we built that was being used as the U.S. backline kit at the time. As soon as this kit was done, it started life as their permanent backline kit in Japan, and is still being used.
