Steam-bent Purple Heart Phattie Snare

by Dennis
December 15th, 2010

Purple Heart is a unique wood that is very dense and has beautiful natural coloring.  These two features make it an ideal wood for building great snare drums.  The density of the wood combined with a nice rounded bearing edge and the die-cast hoops give this drum a thick rimshot that you can feel in your chest.  The natural coloring of the wood requires nothing but a satin clear coat to pull out it’s beauty, and black hardware to add to the contrast.  A stunning little snare drum, check it out:

Steam bent 1-Ply maple sound clip…

by Dennis
November 24th, 2010

Since posting up the beautiful Abalone Inlaid Steam-Bent 1-Ply maple set of Black Label drums, I’ve been hit with a ton of requests to hear a sound sample.  Local drummer Springs was happy to swing them back by to make a Zoom Q3 recording.  The drums are tuned up nice and low, with Ambassador X batters, and a Superkick II/Fiberskyn combo on the bass drum.  As with all our Zoom Q3 sound clips, there is no post-processing, this is the raw sound right off the camera.  There are several more 1-ply kits in the works right now, so check back for some samples tuned up a little higher.  In the mean time, check out this sample of the thunderous 13/16/26 setup:

Solid Maple Black Label with Abalone Inlay

by Dennis
November 2nd, 2010

This is one of the classiest kits I’ve been given the opportunity to build recently, and I couldn’t be more excited about how it looks and sounds!  The foundation started with Vaughncraft single-ply steam bent maple shells.  Then a 1/4″ strip of real abalone shell was inlaid around the center of each shell and then coated in a satin-lacquer finish.  Classic Radio King style hardware was used all around, but with a twist:  All the hardware on this kit was hand finished to a vintage brushed-nickel style feel to compliment the satin finish and vintage vibe.  The final sizes included a 13″ rack tom w/alloy RIMS mount, 16″ floor tom with alloy RIMS cradle, and a 26″ bass with heavy duty spurs.  While I could wax eloquent for paragraphs about it, lets skip to some photos:

WIP – Abalone inlay

by Dennis
October 28th, 2010

Today I’m knee-deep in abalone shell.  Here’s it’s been applied to a 1/4″ groove cut in a one-ply maple, steam bent 13″ tom.  Check back next week for photos of the whole setup, with brushed-satin hardware.  I’m excited to see how this one turns out, check it:

Teak Steam-Bent Snare with maple reinforcement rings, beauty!

by Dennis
December 31st, 2009

This is a beautiful 14″x6.5″ Teak 1-ply snare.  The shell was bent by Vaughncraft, one of the best companies for in the world for steam bent shells.  The main wood is Teak, with Maple 1-ply steam bent reinforcement rings.  Finished in a semi-gloss oil base urethane, hand rubbed to a perfectly smooth sheen, and complimented by reproduction Radio King lugs, classic single-flanged hoops and clips, and a modern Dunnett R-class swivel strainer.  A workhorse that’s also a work of art:
