Cocktail kit, or bop kit, or both?

This unique setup takes the nesting option and pushes it one step further than we’ve gone before. A dual latch system on the cocktail drum allows it to be used as a 16″x24″ upright cocktail drum or as a 16″x14″ bop bass drum. The addition of a 13″ floor tom compliments the standard 10″x8″ rack tom perfectly, for a great bop or cocktail combo. A wide variety of ratcheting clamps, l-rods, and cymbal arms make the setup possibilities as wild as your imagination. Something this cool deserves some attention, and the bright Tangerine Glass Glitter finish definitely stands out. Check it:

Phattie 14″x6″ Snare in Tangerine Glass Glitter

The coolest feature of this 14″x6″ Phattie snare is a custom air brushed badge in matching tangerine glass glitter. Offset from the shell by ten plies of maple, it’s a smooth addition to an already sharp looking snare. Maple shell, solid brass tube lugs, a Trick GS007 strainer and Puresound wires round out the features for a solid work horse snare drum. Check it out:

Tangerine Glass Glitter is one of my favorite finishes on vintage kits, specifically old round-badge Gretsch setups, but it looks just as great on this new set of Phattie drums. The sizes are 10″x8″, 12″x9″, 14″x12″, and 20″x20″, standard Phattie Classic Series with all-maple Keller VSS shells, black-nickel plated hardware, and our new spurs and claws. Tangerine and black, a very nice contrast:

This custom Cocktail Kit recently left for a new home in the U.K., and was special ordered without the snare and with a larger tom. The drummer is planning to use an existing 14″ snare with this kit, hence the larger 12″ tom to compliment the overall larger sound. The main drum is our standard 16″x24″, with the same mounting hardware found on our Deluxe Cocktail Kits. The finish is a stunning Tangerine Glass Glitter, and looks extra classy with the Radio King style lugs, check it out:

I’ve always been a big fan of vintage drums. The sound, the look, the overall vibe they provide. Designing the Black Label Drums is a direct result of my love of old school tubs, and that comes through in both the aesthetics and the sound. The 2010 Chicago Drum Show in May was full of inspiring vintage pieces. Below are a couple of my favorite kits from the show, most dating from the earlier years of drum building and an inspired era of design:

This pair of Ludwig Psychedelic Red kits were in amazing shape, with no fade and stunning chrome. Prone to fading, kits in this condition are rare…and not often found in pairs:

An all original 1952 Gretsch White Pearl set, with a Gold Satin Flame kit peeking out behind it:

Round-Badge Gretsch drums in Tangerine Glass Glitter have long been some of my favorite drums. Something about the color/hardware/sizes/etc. works perfectly:

This George Way kit was one of the sharpest kits at the show. All original hardware and chrome in stunning condition, the aesthetics of this kit were perfect:

Long before DW, there was Camco:

This set of Trixon drums was one of the coolest kits at the show, in my humble opinion. The wrap and a bit of the hardware is unoriginal, but even with the modifications you can’t deny the vintage German vibe of the Trixon egg-shaped bass and conical toms, check it out:

This sweet little kit is from the Phattie Classic Series and includes a custom ported bass head. All Maple VSS shells wrapped in Tangerine Glass Glitter, one of the best wrap colors. Sizes are 12″x7″ rack tom, 14″x14″ floor tom, and 22″x20″ bass drum. This kit currently lives at home with Chris Thompson of the Eli Young Band while his other kits are on tour. Check it out:
