Cocktail kit, or bop kit, or both?

by Dennis
December 7th, 2011

This unique setup takes the nesting option and pushes it one step further than we’ve gone before.  A dual latch system on the cocktail drum allows it to be used as a 16″x24″ upright cocktail drum or as a 16″x14″ bop bass drum.  The addition of a 13″ floor tom compliments the standard 10″x8″ rack tom perfectly, for a great bop or cocktail combo.  A wide variety of ratcheting clamps, l-rods, and cymbal arms make the setup possibilities as wild as your imagination.  Something this cool deserves some attention, and the bright Tangerine Glass Glitter finish definitely stands out.  Check it:

Exotic Red Oak Burl on a little Phattie jazz setup

by Dennis
January 9th, 2010

This particular kit featured a red oak burl veneer created by book-matching the veneer from small sheets from the same log.  This involves carefully slicing the veneer to match up the grain lines, to create mirror images of it around the drum.  The labor is intensive, but the final product is beautiful.  The sizes are 12″x8″, 14″x14″, 18″x14″, and a matching 14″x4″ snare.  The veneer is finished with a thick layer of polyester, buffed to a mirror shine.  There is no coloring or staining, that is the natural hue of the red oak burl.  A great sounding jazz kit suitable for the classiest gig:

Black Label Jazz Kit in Burnt Sienna Satin Lacquer

by Dennis
January 6th, 2010

This kit was originally built for the Nashville Vintage & Custom drum show last summer.  It was a real hit at the show, with the Satin Lacquer finish really showing off the grain of the wood against the vintage Radio King style hardware.  The sizes are 12″x8″ rack tom, 14″x14″ floor tom, 18″x14″ bass, and 14″x5.5″ snare, all to standard Black Label specs (8-ply maple shells, 30-degree bearing edges, diecast hoops, Radio King lugs, etc.).  The addition of a Gibraltar rail mount and the t-handled bass drum tuning rods really pulled together the vintage vibe on this one, check it out:

Phattie Jazz Setup in True Black Glass Glitter

by Dennis
December 29th, 2009

Here’s a sweet little setup from early 2009.  The finish is True Black Glass Glitter, and is an absolute stunner in person.  Much deeper and richer than previous versions of black glass glitter which had a gray or rootbeer appearance to them.  The sizes are 12″x8″ rack tom, 14″x14″ floor tom, and an 18″x14″ bass.  Special order Radio King lugs (normally found on Black Label kits), fully-wrapped bass hoops and heavy duty spurs round out the package.  Great looking kit that sounded perfect tuned high or low.

17″ Bass Drum project. Yup, 17″!

by Dennis
July 28th, 2009

Here’s a conversion project we recently finished up, creating a rare sized bass drum. It’s a Ludwig 17 inch field drum/tenor from 1971, converted to a little jazz/bop bass drum. Building the 17 inch bass hoops was a challenge, but the end result is great. Check it out:
