13″x8″ Steam Bent Walnut Snare

by Dennis
February 28th, 2011

This 1-ply Steam Bent snare was made from a single piece of solid walnut.  With custom fully rounded edges and the 8″ depth, it’s got an old-school fat sound that’s still incredibly crisp at the lower volumes.  I’m a big fan of the steam-bent shells, as they tend to be very sensitive and make great full-bodied snares.    This particular one featured a semi-gloss oil based finish, solid brass tube lugs, the Dunnett R4 MicRo strainer and Puresound wires.  Check it out:

Another magical 80/20 blend of copper and zinc…

by Dennis
November 1st, 2010

This is the second custom snare recently built from this material, and the results are again more than expected.  Built for a local drummer who’s been using a maple 14″x6.5″ and was looking for something more aggressive.  The shell is 14″x6″ and 1/16″ thick with rounded bearing edges.  It’s tricked out with a Dunnett MicRo Throw-off that features a quick release feature for quick head changes without having to take off the snare wires.  Ten solid-brass tube lugs and bronze snare wires complete the package for a great sounding snare drum.  It also looks pretty smooth with the brushed lacquer finish, check it out:

Peacock Pearl Cocktail…or is it a weird convertible kit?

by Dennis
September 29th, 2010

This unique cocktail was created for euGENE Wendell, and is one of the more unique and versatile cocktail kits I’ve done recently.  The finish is a rare and discontinued Peacock Pearl, I was able to snag the last few sheets from a friend in Nashville, just enough to make this versatile setup.  The main cocktail drum features a 18″x16″ main drum with an 18″x8″ woofer attached.  The tom is a 13″x9″ with custom built wood hoops, and the snare is a 13″x6″ with diecast hoops.  The list of custom touches includes Phattie badges, a Dunnett R-Class strainer with quick-release snare change ability, DW/Dunnett quick release spurs for setting up the main cocktail drum as a kick drum, and XLR jacks installed in each drum for internal mic’ing.  Lots of cool setup possibilities with this kit, check out the photos for just a couple:

Phattie 13″x6″ Snare with matching wood hoops

by Dennis
June 10th, 2010

Along with the kit posted yesterday, here is another beautiful drum in the Burnt Sienna Satin Lacquer Burst with matching yamaha-style wood hoops.  13″x6″ 10-Ply shell, Dunnett R-Class strainer, and solid brass tube lugs combine for a sweet little snare.  The yamaha-style wood hoops color matched to the drum gives it a smooth, vintage-like appearance, check it out:

Sounds Like Art Dragon Snare, with natural flames…

by Dennis
April 20th, 2010

This 14″x7″ Dragon Snare features unique coloring that allowed the main shell to be stained a deep red, while the flames remained a natural maple that accents the detail in the carving.  Black Chrome hardware and a Dunnett R-Class strainer provide function that goes great with the form, dig it:
