The depth gives the drum a lot of body, with more tone than most people expected from such a drum. The 14″x5″ Dragon Snare is a fresh new size for 2011. This is the first one to leave the shop featuring 2.3mm hoops and the sound was spot-on, nice and crisp with beefy rim shots. The finish is a steel-blue stain with high gloss lacquer that really pulls out the detail of the carving and contrasts well with the black hardware. Check it out:
Todays post is another great example of the range of custom finishing techniques available on the Sounds Like Art line of carved drums. This 13″x6.5″ Dragon Snare prototype features 4mm thick cold-rolled steel hoops that go perfectly with the thick stave-construction shell. These hoops have a thick and solid rim-shot similar to die casts hoops, but without the dryness that often accompanies die cast hoops. The detail of the 360 degree carved shell is accented by the detail of the machined hoop clips, for an overall package that screams “I’m ready to rock your ears off”. The finish is Scorched Maple with chrome hardware and a black Trick GS007 strainer. Very happy with the way this one turned out, check it:
