14″x5″ Sounds Like Art Dragon in Steel Blue

The 14″x5″ Dragon Snare is a fresh new size for 2011. This is the first one to leave the shop featuring 2.3mm hoops and the sound was spot-on, nice and crisp with beefy rim shots. The finish is a steel-blue stain with high gloss lacquer that really pulls out the detail of the carving and contrasts well with the black hardware. Check it out:

Big is beautiful! Todays kit features a 13″x12″ rack tom, 16″x14″ and 18″x16″ floor toms, and a 26″x14″ bass. All Phattie 100% maple specs with black hardware and a high gloss lacquered paint job. Aside from being silky smooth with a mirror like reflection this finish is also entirely water based. Less solvents and pollution go into the air, and the final finish buffs out to an amazing shine. The black-chrome hardware looks great against the custom mixed deep blue stain, check it out:

Dragon Snare with a touch of gold

Recently displayed at the 2011 Chicago Drum Show, this beautiful Sounds Like Art Dragon Snare turned a lot of heads. This model features a 14″x7″ maple shell finished in dark emerald green stain topped with a light brushing of gold. The protective clear coat is a semi-gloss satin lacquer, and black plated hardware rounds out this drum so it looks just as good as it sounds. The gold features a light metallic shimmer that accents the depth and detail of the wood carving, check it out:

Here’s a beautiful little Phattie auxiliary snare that shipped out last week. It’s a 10″x6″ 10-ply maple with a custom House Of Kolor paint job that fades from a rich blue to a deep green. Solid brass tube lugs, a Trick GS007 strainer, and Puresound wires round it out. A beautiful snare with a lot of pop, check it out:

Friday Flashback! G. Love Japan backline kit

Today’s Friday Flashback dates from around the middle of 2003. This 12″x8″, 16″x16″, and 20″x14″ set of Phatties was finished in a custom Duco style sparkle lacquer and outfitted with Slingerland style lugs and Stick Saver hoops, for a classy old-school vibe all around. The finish was a compliment to the blue & silver sparkle lacquer duco style kit we built that was being used as the U.S. backline kit at the time. As soon as this kit was done, it started life as their permanent backline kit in Japan, and is still being used. New house kit for Echo Mountain Studios

This beauty is the new house kit at Echo Mountain Studios here in Asheville, NC. The sizes are 10″x8″, 12″x9″, 14″x12″, 16″x14″, and 24″x16″. The finish is a water based lacquer over a custom deep red mahogany stain with flecked maple inlays, and the contrast is beautiful. Inlayed wooden hoops combine with the Phattie bearing edge for a pre-eq’ed sound, a perfect blend of punch, sustain, and minor overtones for recording. Custom Echo/Phattie laser engraved badges round out the look, for a smooth modern appearance with a vintage vibe. I could go on and on about this kit, but I’ll cut short the wordy description and let the photos do the talking:

A little High Gloss Maple to start your week…

Last week I refinished an older Phattie kit into a high gloss natural maple finish using 100% water-based finishing products. Water based products have come a long way in the last several years, and the current stuff used on all Stauffer Percussion products provides the same level of performance you get from traditional solvent-based finishes, but without the harmful fumes and toxic clean-up. Spray guns and other equipment can be cleaned out using tap water, no need for lacquer thinner or acetone in the shop. This kit featured a 10″ rack tom, 14″ floor, 22″ bass, and 13″ snare. Here’s a couple detail shots of the finish quality, I’m quite pleased with how the new water based system is working out:

Black Label set in Birds Eye Maple, Abalone Inlay…

This recently finished Black Label kit is beautiful work of art, both in tone and visual appeal. The all-maple shells are veneered in Birds Eye Maple with a 1/4″ abalone shell inlay. Over the veneer and abalone a golden-amber toner was applied, than many coats of beautiful clear, buffed and polished to a silky smooth mirror shine. The sizes are 12″x8″, 14″x14″, and 20″x16″, with special order DW mounts on the 12″ and 14″, and heavy duty spurs on the bass. The photos tell the story on this one, check it out:
