Here’s a close-up look at a recently completed snare that was part of this cool kit. The shell is a 14″x6.5″ 1-Ply Steam Bent maple with matching reinforcement rings, wrapped in a pre-aged marine pearl with the Top Hat & Cane pattern recreated over it. The hardware includes individual radio king lugs top and bottom, stick saver hoops, Dunnett R4 strainer, Puresound wires, and the classy new Steam Bent 1-Ply round badge. Check it out:
Happy New Year! Lets kick it off with some exciting news: The Avett Brothers took delivery of their new kit just in time for the sold-out New Years Eve show in Asheville, and are now rockin’ an awesome set of Black Label drums. A heavy vintage vibe was desired from this setup, both to compliment the sound and the aesthetics of their style. The result is a Black Label kit featuring 13″x9″ and 16″x16″ wood-hooped toms, a 22″x14″ bass, and a 14″x6.5″ snare. Finish is a custom mixed blend of reds and browns to create a very old-school mahogany, and the hoops have a deep amber and tobacco mix on them to give that aged vibe. Lugs are Radio King reproductions with a brushed satin nickel style finish, and coated heads were used top and bottom to get that really warm old-school sound. Even the Silver Glass Glitter inlay on the bass hoops was pre-aged and features no gloss, a perfect match to the hardware and hoops.

Purple Heart is a unique wood that is very dense and has beautiful natural coloring. These two features make it an ideal wood for building great snare drums. The density of the wood combined with a nice rounded bearing edge and the die-cast hoops give this drum a thick rimshot that you can feel in your chest. The natural coloring of the wood requires nothing but a satin clear coat to pull out it’s beauty, and black hardware to add to the contrast. A stunning little snare drum, check it out:
This set of Phattie Drums dates from around early 2004. Featuring a beautiful Red Onyx finish over classic sizes, Slingerland lugs and a DW Rail Mount really complete the vintage vibe. The toms are 12″x8″, 14″x14″, and 16″x16″, with a matching 20″x14″ bass and 14″x6.5″ snare. It’s kits like this that eventually grew into the Black Label concept that we now offer. Check it out:
The Eli Young Band is currently pounding the pavement on the Country Throwdown Tour, hitting cities all over the U.S. with a ton of incredibly talented artists. Last week I had the opportunity to catch a show and deliver a new snare to Chris Thompson, drummer for the Eli Young Band. The snare is 14″x6.5″ clear acrylic with frosted EYB and Phattie logos, and a custom lighting system with remote control. This snare turns heads unlike anything else, watch the video below to get a full sampling of the different colors/fades/flashes/etc. that it is capable of.
