Robert George recently opened up a beautiful new studio here in Asheville. Sound Temple was designed as a “sacred recording space” that is also a world class recording studio designed by renowned studio designer Wes LaChot. The new Phattie house-kit for the studio features 10″x8″ and 12″x9″ rack toms, 14″x12″ and 16″x14″ floor toms, 22″x16″ and 18″x14″ bass drums, and a 14″x7″ snare. The drums are all maple and feature an ebony & cherry inlay around each shell that compliments the black-chrome hardware. This smooth Black Label bop kit is enroute to it’s new home in Norway. Featuring several custom touches that really lock in the vintage vibe, this kit sounded just as good as it looked. The wrap is actual vintage gold glass glitter, made from a different type of crushed glass than the current glitters that are manufactured. The result is a deeper shimmer under bright lights that looks amazing in person. This monster rock kit featured a 13″ rack tom, 18″ floor tom, and 28″ bass drum. The special part about this kit is it was build using NOS Slingerland shells sold off during a move or liquidation of some of the Slingerland inventory and tooling. It’s been about six years, so I don’t recall the exact details, but the shells were NOS Slingerlands and made for a great sounding kit. The black stripes and stars over the chrome wrap made this kit visually striking, a great compliment to the sound and perfect for some pounding rock. Check it out:
This particular kit featured a red oak burl veneer created by book-matching the veneer from small sheets from the same log. This involves carefully slicing the veneer to match up the grain lines, to create mirror images of it around the drum. The labor is intensive, but the final product is beautiful. The sizes are 12″x8″, 14″x14″, 18″x14″, and a matching 14″x4″ snare. The veneer is finished with a thick layer of polyester, buffed to a mirror shine. There is no coloring or staining, that is the natural hue of the red oak burl. A great sounding jazz kit suitable for the classiest gig:
