This months issue of DRUM! Magazine (July, 2010) has a great feature on Frank Knuckles Walker, the percussionist for the Roots. Frank is a killer drummer and got the gig as the Roots percussionist in 2001, after the Neda Stella tour with Erykah Badu, where he was holding the tight beat on a set of wood-hooped Phatties. Sizes included a 10″x8″ rack tom, 16″x16″ floor tom, 24″x20″ bass, and a variety of 20-ply piccolo snares. Ten years, my how time flies…

This unique set of Phattie drums features a puzzle finish made from sparkle drum wrap. The sizes on this kit are 10″x6″, 12″x7″, 16″x14″, 24″x20″, and a matching 13″x7″ snare. This is an exclusive finish to Phattie, and we’ve got another kit in the works right now that features different colors and is built from Glass Glitter, not sparkle, which has a different look to it with a lot more pop. Check back for photos of that kit in a couple of weeks. In the mean time, here’s a few good shots of our unique puzzle finish made from a sparkle base:

This Friday we’re looking back to 2006, when we built some sweet kits for use in the ’07 catalog. This kit features a Viper Silver base coat with Orange Kandy stripes over a sparkle base, and was photographed on the drag strip at Bristol Motor Speedway. The rack tom was 13″x9″, floor toms of 16″x14″ and 18″x16″, with a beefy 24″x20″ bass and matching 14″x8″ snare. A huge rock’n'roll setup with a sweet paint job, one of my favorite kits from the last 10+ years:

This Deluxe Cocktail Kit features a beautiful high-gloss Tobacco Burst lacquer that looks outstanding in person. The snare and tom were airbrushed with a one-way fade that lines up with the top half of the burst on the main drum, looks stellar when setup. The photos tell the story on this one, check it out:

This unique Phattie setup featured a heavy duty Flat Black wrap with Black Nickel hardware. The sizes include 8″x7″, 10″x8″, 13″x12″ and 15″x13″ toms, with a 22″x18″ bass. This allows for a tight two-up two-down setup while keeping everything nice and close. The Flat Black wrap with glossy black nickel hardware looks killer, check it out:
