The Eli Young Band is currently pounding the pavement on the Country Throwdown Tour, hitting cities all over the U.S. with a ton of incredibly talented artists. Click the image above for a list of dates and get yourself there if you’re a fan of rockin’ country music! Last week I had the opportunity to catch a show and deliver a new snare to Chris Thompson, drummer for the Eli Young Band. The snare is 14″x6.5″ clear acrylic with frosted EYB and Phattie logos, and a custom lighting system with remote control. This snare turns heads unlike anything else, watch the video below to get a full sampling of the different colors/fades/flashes/etc. that it is capable of. Very cool stuff, look for several full kits later this summer with similar systems we are currently engineering (or click here to check out one we recently did featuring low-profile LED Black Lights!) Dig it:
This work of art features our new internal lighting system that is the thinnest, lightest, and brightest available. These new LED based lights are laminated inside the shell and are paper thin, with the actual LED’s standing less than 1/8″ tall, for a smooth unobtrusive look. Miles ahead of the center-mounted light bulbs and other options drummers turn to.
Highlighting this custom Phattie Acrylic kit is a 28″x20″ HCL bass drum, with the smaller bass in Pink Fluorescent acrylic. The rack tom is a 12″x8″, and the floor toms are 14″x10″ and 16″x12″, both on DSS suspension cradles. Solid brass tube lugs, chrome bass hoops, and clean custom wiring and power jacks make this kit a playable work of art.
We first began producing the HCL bass system in early 2008 with great results and positive reviews from drummers near and far. The HCL system is based on the Haskell theory of sound waves, providing a drum that acts as both a small bass drum and a large woofer, and is tuned for optimal low-end response. The 20″ Batter head on the 28″ bass is positioned to provide the same pedal feel and response as a 22″ bass drum. To learn more about the system visit the Innovations page at PhattieDrums.com by clicking here.
This kit was created to capture the feel of a Big Band kit from the era when Radio Kings and Rolling Bombers were the drums of choice. The toms are 12″x8″, 14″x14″, and 16″x16″, each with inlayed wood hoops. The bass is a 28″ HCL system, and the snare 14″x7″ with single-flanged hoops. Pre-Aged White Pearl and Radio King lugs round out the package for an exceptionally classy setup.
This particular kit featured a red oak burl veneer created by book-matching the veneer from small sheets from the same log. This involves carefully slicing the veneer to match up the grain lines, to create mirror images of it around the drum. The labor is intensive, but the final product is beautiful. The sizes are 12″x8″, 14″x14″, 18″x14″, and a matching 14″x4″ snare. The veneer is finished with a thick layer of polyester, buffed to a mirror shine. There is no coloring or staining, that is the natural hue of the red oak burl. A great sounding jazz kit suitable for the classiest gig:
Here’s a Phattie Custom Shop kit completed a few years ago, but deserves a current entry into the “Gallery – Best of the Best” category. The paint job was custom matched to an actual 8-bit Nintendo, and finished with a perfect satin-sheen top coat. Tube lugs were powder coated bright red, with the rest of the hardware powder coated high gloss black. The sizes are 12″x8″ rack tom, 16″x14″ hanging floor tom, and a 22″x20″ bass. The logo head was created in-house using multiple layers of vinyl, and the Nintendo-style badges were created in-house using a laser cutter and special plastics. From the font on the badges to the bass head, this kit was all about the details and came together beautifully, a great example of what’s possible when you bring us your great idea and we go to work on it! Check it out:
All our paint work is done in-house, and this flawless kit is a great example of what’s possible in the custom shop. The rack tom sizes are 10″x7″, 12″x7.5″, and 13″x8″, with 16″x15″ and 18″x16″ floor toms. The bass is a 24″x20″ cannon, and a custom painted 14″x7″ Sounds Like Art Dragon Snare rounds out the kit. The shells are all Keller VSS Maple, 6-ply toms & an 8-ply bass. The paint work features a transparent red kandy on the stripes and logos that lets the grain show through, with an ultra high gloss clear coat on top. The result is a kit that is just as rock’n'roll as it is classy, and qualifies for our Best of the Best gallery category.
