January 2010 marks 10 years since the idea of creating Phattie Drums and Stauffer Percussion was born. Throughout 2000 there was a lot of brainstorming, a website was created and a few prototypes were built. After some trial and error searching for the sound and response I wanted from a drum, a 14”x4” snare was created that fit the bill. Featuring a very thin shell and rounded 45-degree bearing edges, this drum had the response, tone, and attack that made me believe I was on to something good. A local drummer stopped by to see what I was working on and took the drum through its paces. After tuning it to various ranges and playing it for a few minutes, he placed an order on the spot and Phattie Drums was on it’s way.
The past ten years have been quite the journey, filled with more experiences and opportunities than I could have imagined at the beginning. I’ve been be a one-man shop in a garage and a subsidiary of a larger company where I worked with some of the world’s most skilled craftsmen. I’ve worked with hundreds of amazing drummers worldwide and I’m humbled by the number of them that choose to play Phattie and Black Label drums as they tour and record. Reflecting on these experiences over the past months, the future of Stauffer Percussion has become very clear. At the end of the day, it’s not about building the most drums, having the most endorsers or printing the flashiest advertisements. My goal is to ensure that from the time you first contact me about your custom kit, until the time you sit down behind your new drums, it’s all about you loving your drums. After 10 years of diverse experience in the industry, this is what drives the work I do and it will continue to be my focus going forward.
I want you to love your drums.

Back in the office full-time, and we’ve hit the ground running! Look for frequent updates to this blog as the many cool projects we’ve been working on get posted. Also check back for a cool new gallery feature that will arrive in January, and allow you to sort photos by type (Phattie, Black Label, Cocktail, etc.), or by finish (satin, wraps, sparkles, pearls, etc.), by hardware finish (chrome, black chrome, brass, satin), or even by individual drum size (show all kits with a 22″x18″, for example). Stay tuned!

This week has featured some exciting updates to our line of cocktail drums, found at CocktailDrumsets.com. The hi-hat and cymbal boom arms are now mounted using infinitely adjustable ratchet clamps, and a mini gig rug with Velcro-equipped pedal now come standard. One of the benefits to our new mounting system is the ability to position and use full-size cymbals, the setup below is pictured with 14 inch hats and an 18 inch crash/ride. Check out the website for close-up shots of all the unique details that make these the best cocktail drums on the market.

Effective today all new orders will have a lead time of between 10 and 16 weekends, depending on the style of build. Wrapped drums from the Phattie Classic Series, wrapped Black Label drums, and Cocktail drums will ship in 10 to 12 weeks. Phattie Acrylic drums will ship within 14 weeks, and Phattie Hybrid kits will ship within 16 weeks. Custom lacquers, exotic finishes, and extremely custom builds will be quoted on an individual basis. We’d like to thank everyone who has helped make this a great year so far, and forced us to extend lead times despite the economic down turn. What a great problem to have!
In other news, here’s a solid rosewood Sounds Like Art Series I drum we recently retrofit with solid brass tube lugs for a customer. She’s a beauty:
